Title: Generating good shadows on terrain
Post by: Asdrael on February 23, 2017, 03:40:38 PM
I'm trying to have dark, sharp shadows cast by terrain (the actual textured heightmap, not an object) onto itself. I can't manage. Played with params.ini and .amb to no avail.

Any tips?

I did this as a texture layer. Imported the heightmap into blender, set up scale, set up sun position to be the same as Params and amb, rendered shadows, exported orthographic view from above at 2049, made a black tile, made a mask from the render at 20% opacity.

Looked great, but of course this becomes a deformable layer.

Perhaps pib could add a layer type that doesn't deform and loose texture but sits above everything else, allowing layers below to deform correctly.

The other problem was there was a slight overlap in some places and I couldn't work out why. Other places it looked 100% perfect.

Question 2 about shadows: anyway to ge the layout (track.lyt) stuff to cast shadows?

At the moment it's not possible.
