Title: MX Bikes - A total Off road Noob - Modding - Help
Post by: Myst1cPrun3 on January 07, 2020, 08:22:44 PM
Hi guys, a few of you may know me from GP Bikes, and after seeing a few videos, and a steam release, I picked up MX Bikes on steam.

I am a complete noob when it comes to off road riding, Having never seen an MX/Off Road Motorcycle race. The closest I ever got is a stunt show at the local motorcycle show.

That being said, I tried MX Bikes, and I am quite surprised at how much I've been enjoying it. Now I know in GP Bikes, the default content only shows a very minute possibility of the engine, and the simulation, and having the right Mods are pretty much a must for an 'ideal experience'.

I am again presuming something similar exists over here on MX Bikes, and I would appreciate being pointed in the direction of recommended mods, that are most used, and give the best experience. As when it comes to off road riding, my experience is limited to a Yamaha PW-50 about 15 years ago, and I spent a grand total of 15 or so minutes on it. That's it.

I also have 0 idea how the riders body position affects things. On a road racing machine, I understand hanging off and all that, however on the dirt I have 0 clue.
This results in my controls, likely being far from ideal, and optimised, so some advice and recommendations in setting those up Would, again, be helpful.

(For reference I'm using an Xbox One Game Pad)

TIA, and here is a video of me Noobing a lap around Winchester I think it is.

Good to hear you're enjoying it, do you have any mods at all yet?

For controls compared to GPB you'll need to get into using the lean front and back and sitting to get around any track better and faster. Also further down the line left right lean can be helpful but less so. You might be using the helps for lean and sit etc now but best to turn them off asap tbh, although some you can use manually in conjunction with the helpers (probably best to stick with shift and clutch help though).

I'll have a fiddle with the assists then.
At the minute I'm running pretty much all the rider movement aids, as I don't really know enough to judge which ones are more important, as its not as simple as l/R, f/R like GP Bikes.

But I will definitely start by removing some of those.

As for mods, I have installed the OEM bike pack, and a few tracks, can't remember which ones however.

The bikes seemed good, high quality, can't say in handling as I don't know how they should handle in comparison to real life.

Tracks it seemed were a bit hit and miss, the one I had the most fun on being an enduro track.

Any mod suggestions?

You've got the most important mod, the OEM bikes. Other than that it's tracks, paints and sounds mods. I'd the custom sounds are the next most game changing mod imo, they are way better than stock ones.  If you're still early doors and not going online the stock tracks are probably best to learn on for now, Club, Practice Track and Forest are good to get bike experience with.

The 1st lean help i'd try turning off and doing manually is front and back, it can make the bike do some weird stuff when jumping.

The OEM Bikes seem to handle a little differently to the stock ones, but I'm still learning whats good and whats bad.

I don't tend to touch online until I'm capable of doing consistent laps without crashing, as I hate being in the way, and don't want my stray bike to take someone out. However in MXB I have been starting off with some guys from GP Bikes, (TomHWK and Matty) which is the only reason I delved into the online at this stage.

As for actually riding, I removed the F/B Rider assist, and it's changed the approach I take to riding completely, and has highlighted just how little I actually know.

It seems to me that getting the bike to be 'settled' and 'smooth' in the air is a lot more difficult now, and as the amount of control in the air is VERY Limited, so I can only assume I'm launching off the up-ramp incorrectly, with the throttle inputs and rider position. Is there a specific way of doing things in this regard, or specific bike behaviours I should be on the look out for?

What I will say about MXB is it's refreshing, and fun to go into something as a Complete, (and I mean Complete) noob. It sounds odd, but with tarmac racing, there are several skills/theories that transfer from game to game, sim to sim, and even from car to bike. But here, I know literally nothing about off road riding, and am having to learn all over again. Its quite fun actually, and something I didn't think I'd enjoy as much as I am.

Could do with getting on voice chat one night, will be much quicker to explain things and I can take you through some of the basics on track. Also if you lookup how to ride a real mx bike, you'll find most of it relatable to this game.

I'll deffo look into the discord. Its also good to know that at least some real world MX riding is translatable to the sim, a good sign.
