Track Ruts ala Perris Raceway?

So I have a rough understanding how to make texture ruts, use the layer masks at 4-8k to draw on ruts but every time I try my drawn ruts they come out looking blurred and nowhere near as clean as tracks like Perris (only using this as example been burning laps and cant get over how much I love the textures!).  So I'm just trying to get some direction is there something with the normal maps I'm not getting?  I love the look of a lot of the newer tracks coming out and a lot seem to use this technique for creating "rutty" textures that follow the track path.
